Students will study a range of topic areas including cell structure, molecular genetics and evolution. They will be able to use specialised equipment and carry out more complex scientific investigations such as: separating DNA out by size to compare samples with a known sample of DNA (gel electrophoresis); and designing and implementing their own investigation for the coursework element of the course.
There will be organised visits to the university and other research laboratories in and around Cambridge, such as the Babraham Institute. This gives students the opportunity to see science in action, as well as to giving an insight into the range of careers available in Biology.
The course starts with a review of statistical analysis techniques that all students will need to understand. As each new subject area is encountered there will be a basic review of the GCSE knowledge required and students will be given websites or texts to read in order to refresh their knowledge. Key vocabulary will also be reviewed.
Students will be expected to read around the subject in their own time to extend their knowledge. Discussion in class will be actively encouraged to allow students to construct balanced arguments and learn to use evidence to support their point of view. This can be extended into actual debates on controversial subjects.
As part of the Institute for Research in Schools, students at Parkside Sixth have the opportunity to take part in pioneering research. We currently have two projects underway: the Authentic Biology group are looking to isolate novel bacteriophage species and use DNA sequencing to search for possible bacterial specificity; the Whipworm team are using DNA analysis software to annotate the recently-sequenced whipworm genome.
The communication skills, analytic ability and logical thinking demonstrated within this subject are transferable to many other subjects.
