The IB Film course aims to develop your skills so that you become more adept in interpreting and making film texts.
Through the study and analysis of film texts and hands-on filmmaking, the IBDP film course explores film history, theory and socio-economic background. The course develops your critical abilities, enabling you to appreciate the multiplicity of cultural and historical perspectives in film. To achieve an international understanding within the world of film, you are taught to consider film texts, theories and ideas from the points of view of different individuals, nations and cultures.
The IB Film course emphasizes the importance of working individually and as a member of a group. You are encouraged to develop the professional and technical skills (including organizational skills) needed to express yourselves creatively in film. At the core of the IB Film course lies a concern with clarity of understanding, critical thinking, reflective analysis, effective involvement and imaginative synthesis that is achieved through practical engagement in the art and craft of film.
Film is assessed through a portfolio as students complete four major projects:
- An essay deconstructing an international film
- A virtual presentation exploring the development of a genre or film movement
- Individual construction of three short films from the perspective of three different film roles
- A collaborative film project with an individual reflective essay
Higher Level students have 5 lessons per week. Standard Level students have 3 lessons per week. Outside of timetabled lessons, students are expected to work independently.
There is no requirement for students to have studied Film or Media Studies beforehand, but we would ask that students have a grade 5 or 6 in a Humanities subject, as well as a love of film.
Entry Requirements
Standard Level - GCSE English Literature/Language at Grade 4 and above
Higher Level - GCSE English Literature/Language at Grade 4 and above
